Kings, lords and princes are vestiges of the past that we should get rid off.
Heritage of leadership is a notion that is dumb and gives privileges.
Royalty is still in England for instance. And the fact that paying taxes for people who basically don't do much or well- anything by living a luxurious life tax free is not particularly nice.
It's cool and all to say "long live the queen" but when it comes to the pocket, not so much. I could write a very detailed essay to why monarchy is not a good system and democracy here in this case is superior.
But what do i want to talk about is something that i would have been part of.
It's titles.
You see, in Lebanon you can have titles next to your name if your family was a noble one back in where spears and blades were used.
And well it's something that can seem harmless, and frankly it is. But it is something of the past.
The reason why I say that I would have became one of them is because I am a chehab, and well the title of prince would have been given to me if my grandfather may his soul rest in heaven didn't take down this title since as far as I know, that he thought it Was useless.
Yes of course i can joke all i want about why he did this. But, my grandfather was humble. I can be proud of this action. Because I don't think it's easy to say no to nobility even if it's just a title.
It's something admirable.
But enough being biased.
I think it was the right decision. Because we should destroy all vestiges of inequality, or of higher authority that is not truly legitimated by the people. And well, it's something that remained, to remind us of a hierarchy, even if it's a lot of times overlooked, sometimes even identity papers asks if you have a title.
Titles don't mean anything anymore really, just an ego booster nowadays. It's utterly useless, so there is no harm keeping it?
Yes and no.
Some people wouldn't take their titles seriously, others will want it to become an official nickname. The annoying thing is when it comes to politicians. If they are cheikhs or whatever.
When Washington was elected president, he was called grace.
He was against that, and changed it.
Now it's Mr President. Let's not come back to the feudal age please.
Words can mean a lot, history even more so, it's full of symbols, it's politics, it's loyalties its what we call in Arabic "El Sem3a", sometimes family names are what determine the person whether he is rich or poor, if your family name is that of nobility you are ipso facto an "IBN 3ayle" on first sight for some people . (it means issued by a good notable family)
I am not calling to take away the names of family heritage it's just a thought. I know these things can ego boost because it happened to me. And well it's not all bad. But my family doesn't rule Mont Lebanon no more perhaps this on its own is a symbol .
Titles should remind us to not come back to these types of things, if someone wants a title, they need to earn it.
It's also a question of not giving importance to a politicians last name. But here in Lebanon it means a lot. I won't name, if I forget one I'd be labeled But to say the truth there are politicians who gain a big plus because of their family name.
Their family name can bring the good past, victories, or even trust.
Which can be dangerous.
We shouldn't live in a world where we vote for the sons of men that were successful, heroic, and strong.
The sons are not the fathers (duh) and they should build themselves alone.
If the father or the ancestors in your eyes did something well, it doesn't mean the son will do too. I think most Lebanese agree, that many fathers were better then the sons.
And then , Why do some Lebanese people still go after them? There are many reasons. But from a sociological point of view, people like to have a leader to protect them, we live in a country where we know confessional massacres happened.
And we are not over the idea that some people in some communities have so much hatred from the ones that are different then them.
So history aside.
The present showed us this with the events of "Tayouneh".
For me it's just a portion of the population who are brainwashed or just paranoid, and have their blood boiling on any religious type event. We should not let those people take over Lebanon. Christians, druzes, shias and Armenians and sunnis and more -- we all can live together. I've seen it. It's up to us to stop hatred. My university and school like others by the way show this diverse life. We can. Do not let them let you think we cannot. We can.
Their titles are nothing. We are not inferior to them, we are the folk, we are equal, we need to Stand united.
