If you want to fight a war don't tell your people you will lose.
This is pretty straight forward.
But some leaders might appear broken in front of their people when war starts.
Which is totally understandable.
But a leader should never let a tear out in front of the masses. He needs to lead and not cry.
He cannot show any weakness to the enemy, even when fighting to get sympathy from the international committee, which won't help him out of sympathy but because of a political agenda. Look at Zelensky for a moment.
He didn't even leave Kiev.
Now every man that stands with Ukraine acknowledges that Zelensky got the biggest balls in the world.
People love bravery, not cowardice. People deep inside care a lot about honor, maybe they won't die because of a country, but they might die for family, for love, for themselves, for their goals, for their ideals, for their street, friends ,etc.
And thus there is this notion of hope in all of us. Some might be more hopeful then others yes. But in times of crisis not necessarily war, the population needs to feel hope, and not fall into depression.
The people need to see ambition and solutions in the eyes of the leaders whether they like them or not, it's them that are taking decisions.
In time of crisis the leader needs to stay with his people and not run away, he needs to feel the bombardments, the famine, the sickness and the death.
As for De Gaule he didn't have no particular choice, he kept fighting. And to be honest, if he stayed he would have probably died.
But in general the leader lives truly his leadership when he is fighting for something that seems lost and then succeeds. Imagine if Ukraine wins. Zelensky will 100000% not lose his elections, and he will be remembered forever. You need to implant strength in your people, you need to give them courage, adrenaline for it makes each men feel like a thousand.
Let the children sing songs of bravery when millions died. Let the ones who become elders write legends. Let the ones who died be remembered. Let the ones who fought and survive feel like heroes. You need to give this to your people. You have to.
Know your public . Words are as sharp as the blade that may kill you for pronouncing them.
