10 million views in 4hours. When I checked back at night the same day it 44 million views.. The video that the guardian released on Will Smith slapping an award winning comedian that won the Oscar's on stage.
Why?
Because the comedian made a joke about the wife of Will, making fun of her illness, pointing out her loss of hair. Whether you are with or against this. This whole event mad me understand things about human nature, that I might look out for.
Humans love real drama. Not only that, they love it when it's so far from them, this way they can comment about anything they want and say whatever they want about it.
Exactly like this happened. Many people including me didn't know the Oscar's were that day, but now 44 million people (and counting) know. Oh and by the way, the slap became a meme. But, if the guardian posted about a random man or women being slapped in the park, I don't think it would have gone very high in terms of views.
Unless it's a compilation of people getting slapped or, well important people getting slapped. But whatever it is. Humans like this stuff. They like idols, they like important people having drama. Look at the conflict between Russia and Ukraine.
I can guarantee if you weren't in a conversation about this subject you surely heard people discussing it. The guardian should wait another month then post a video of the same event, but with unknown people. It would be interesting to see how many people would care. But I want to understand why.
Why do we like to follow? Why do we like to take a stance with a side? Or why do we care about those things? Maybe it's because we forget.
We forget that these stars, politicians, and rich people are Humans. With emotions, mistakes and logic. We think they are perfect, and even if you went to anyone with a critical mindset and asked does this particular actor does mistakes I can guarantee the answer will be yes. Manipulation rarely works when you say you want to manipulate the person.
Manipulation and influence takes you off guard. Who in the world would have ever thought this would happen? Imagine if tomorrow President Macron slaps President Biden. The internet would literally crash by the amounts of news and memes. But nobody would give a flying fish if it was random people. Nobody would give it any attention whatsoever if it was the same people but without the title of President with them. The reaction of the people showed that mostly everyone that watched it, enjoyed and took a side likes to spill some tea and likes drama, maybe he or she likes it from afar or maybe from up-close, most would pick the first option.
Maybe in this slap we were shocked to see that "oh they do that too" because let's be honest we all got slapped at some point in our live or about to get slapped whether jokingly or seriously, and thus we register that as "it's just a thing normal people do when they joke or are angry" but when we see those happy, rich, successful, powerful people.
We Forget that they are the same race that we are. They cry, they get hurt, they get sentimental.
Even if i asked you this question face to face, you will say this is not true. But as I said, it gets you off guard.
And perhaps there is nothing wrong with it. But it shows how important the exterior image of somebody can give you an opinion of them.
It let's us think that is it a good choice that those people are considered sometimes perfect?
And that now we are finding flaws? Whatever your answer is, we cannot deny that, the exterior image of someone, varies from person to person.
The invisible mask you wear in front of society is the exact Same one the others are wearing. The difference is a difference in life and personality which is a huge difference of course.
But a mask is a mask, even if it's made up of gold and silver...
The lesson of communication that we've learned is that how stars and how fame can build us an image that can seem so pure and so good.
But deep inside we can suffer. It's weird to think about it, but known leaders surely cried while in power in a room away from the crowd. Caesar, De Gaulle, Hitler, Churchill, Stalin, Truman, Nero, Hannibal Baca and so on. Is making an image of being better then a human a good thing? well If you're a leader you should be solid and strong, hopeful but not tearful. Let the tears flow when you are inside a room away from the cheers.
Showing your humanity will render you equal, but if you show that you the top of the top, you will gain admiration, people like to side with winners, or at least underdogs that win.
